Vineyards

Where great wines begin

You need great grapes to make great wine. This is why we farm our own vineyards for much of our production, and rely on carefully sourced sites for our Napa Valley, Micro-lot, and Abstract wines.

Game Farm Vineyard

State Lane

Our estate vineyard is located in an area we call Yountville East, because our terroir is so different from the rest of the appellation. Old river beds slant across our property, creating varied growing conditions within vineyard blocks and across the property. River rocks large and small dominate the landscape, along with deposits of gravel, sand, and sediment.

Located between up-valley’s heat and San Pablo Bay’s cool, the extended growing season here results in balanced wines with finesse and vibrant, energetic tannins.

Tasting Room

The Goosecross tasting room sits at the edge of our estate vineyard on the spot where our founders once had their home. Wanting to share their phenomenal back porch view, we built a new tasting room there in 2015 – aiming to replicate the “Old Napa” vibe with a “New Napa” sensibility. We included a new barrel room here so guests can stay close to production, and we converted the old residence driveway into a new vineyard block.

Winery

Our winemaker Bill Nancarrow designed the layout of our winery building, which we finished renovating in August 2015. With Bill in charge, every detail – from the location of the electrical plugs to the placement of fermentation tanks and concrete eggs – was chosen to optimize operations. This modern, temperature-controlled space just a few yards from our vineyard is where we make all our Goosecross and C. Elizabeth wines.

Napa Valley

We source fruit for our Napa Valley Selection from vineyard sites that we believe capture the core of Napa Valley expression. Every one of our Napa Valley wines is sourced from vines we know and love, after years of careful vetting.

We seek out the vineyards best suited to the grape varieties we need – so some are just down the road, while others are across the valley. Working with the owners, we ensure that these special sites are farmed in ways that bring out the best in the grapes.

Game Farm

Just to the north of State Lane, Game Farm is the source for our single-vineyard Oakville Cabernet as well as C. Elizabeth. The southern portion is home to the Rockpit Block – which looks exactly like its name. With nothing to absorb water, this area drains like a sieve, producing delicate Cabernet Sauvignon with beautiful red fruit notes.

The Trailside Block, in the northeast corner, has iron-rich topsoil that makes it easier for vines to take in water and mature their clusters. As a result, canopies grow fuller, berries are slightly larger, and the wine has a relatively darker fruit profile with more mid-palate structure.

Winemaking

A little science, a little art, and a whole lot of love

Our winemaker Bill Nancarrow is a farmer at heart – meticulously crafting wines that reflect their origins in an authentic and delicious way. As each new vintage comes in, we let the grapes dictate a lot of how we manage them, always looking for new ways of improving and elevating our quality even more.

Goosecross winemaker Bill Nancarrow

Every detail matters

We use various fermentation and aging vessels – from large tanks to small micro bins, and barrels to concrete eggs. Stainless tanks capture the fresh purity of the natural fruit flavors; neutral French oak brings warmer, textural components; concrete eggs bring a distinctive minerality and fatter texture to whites, thanks to the superior lees suspension the egg shape allows. For wines aged in oak, Bill has his favorite dozen or so barrel producers he regularly turns to, but he also likes to try new coppers to see how they will enhance the wines.

Our goal with this approach is to create a diverse painter’s palette of components that we can blend into a complex synergy of flavor, texture and aroma.
